A first for the housing industry: Stuttgart Housing and Urban Development Corporation (SWSG) is the first housing company in Germany to meet the requirements of the “We Impact” Standard Level 2. The independent audit of its sustainability management system highlights what is already being practiced within the organization: a structured sustainability management system that integrates environmental, social, and governance aspects with economic activity.
With over 20,000 rental units under its own management, SWSG is one of Germany’s largest municipal housing companies. Its stated goal is to provide livable and affordable housing and to enhance Stuttgart’s appeal as a place to live. As part of an independent audit, SWSG underwent an assessment of its sustainability management. The result: SWSG meets the strict requirements of the “We Impact” Standard Level 2 and is thus the first housing company in Germany to be awarded the sustainability certificate.
The audit was conducted as a combined process: a parallel certification process in accordance with the EMAS environmental management standard and the “We Impact” Level 2 sustainability management standard, which builds upon it. The audit was carried out by independent, accredited environmental verifiers with “We Impact” additional qualifications.
Dr. Mathieu Riegger, Head of Energy & Sustainability at SWSG, emphasizes: “The ‘We Impact’ certification is an important milestone for us. It confirms our commitment to sustainability and demonstrates that we systematically and transparently integrate environmental, social, and governance aspects into our business processes. A clear example of this is the successful implementation of our ambitious climate strategy, which consistently focuses not only on the goal of climate neutrality but also on affordable housing.”
Through its forward-thinking approach, SWSG is laying a solid foundation for future sustainability requirements. By making sustainable investments in its housing portfolio, it is pursuing its Climate Mission 2035.
We warmly congratulate SWSG on its certification and are delighted to welcome them to the “We Impact” community.
