We congratulate Mission Leben on its successful certification under EMAS and “We Impact.” The diaconal social enterprise, headquartered in Darmstadt, has had all 35 of its facilities certified company-wide. This is a remarkable achievement that demonstrates that systematic sustainability management can also be implemented in the complex, decentralized structures of the social economy.

Since 1849, Mission Leben has been supporting people in difficult life situations: young and elderly people, those in need of care, those nearing the end of life, people with disabilities, and those facing social emergencies. In the greater Rhine-Main area, the organization operates approximately 35 facilities and an academy for nursing and social work professions. Responsibility for people and the environment is central to the organization’s identity. With the introduction of an integrated sustainability management system (INAMAS), Mission Leben has translated this commitment into binding structures that systematically embed ecological, social, and economic goals.

Concrete measures are already part of everyday life: approximately two-thirds of the organization’s electricity supply has been switched to renewable energy sources, the vehicle fleet is being gradually converted to electric vehicles, and employees receive a subsidy toward the Deutschlandticket. In addition, Mission Leben 2025 has introduced free and anonymous psychosocial counseling for all employees. The results are documented in the organization’s first sustainability report.

EMAS provides Mission Leben with a transparent system for assessing and improving its environmental performance. “We Impact” complements this as a certifiable sustainability management system that integrates environmental, social, and governance aspects into business practices. This makes sustainability continuously measurable and commits the organization to transparency toward all stakeholders.

We are pleased to welcome Mission Leben to the “We Impact” community. This certification clearly demonstrates that systematic sustainability management can be successfully implemented even in large social organizations with multiple locations.
